THE WAY
1899-1903
Introducing THE WAY
THE WAY journal was produced by James A. Harding between 1899 and 1903. It began while he was President of the Nashville Bible School in Nashville, Tennessee (today's Lipscomb University), and continued through his departure to Bowling Green, Kentucky, where he served as President of Potter Bible College. The paper began the first year as a 16-page monthly magazine, and in the second year it was increased to be a 24-page monthly. In the third year it was made an 8-page weekly, and by 1903, a 16-page weekly. Harding had intended to make the paper free of charge, but postal regulations demanded a paid-up prescription list. So, he charged 50 cents a year. Not like the other brotherhood journals, THE WAY did not utilize advertisments to pay for the paper. In fact, Harding received no personal support from its proceeds. Some of the earliest writers for the paper were J. A. Harding; J. N. Armstrong; R. H. Boll; L. S. White; M. C. Kurfees; F. W. Smith; R. W. Officer; W. Anderson; J. W. Shepherd; A. Kendrick; W. J. Brown; T. R. Burnett, to name a few.
This is the first attempt at preserving digitally the pages of THE WAY. The microfilm was borrowed from HST and was sent to a professional to scan into pdf files at 300 dpi. The ones who made the scan originally, did not have the contrast and the darkness tuned in so many of the edges of the pages are too dark, some too dark to read. In an attempt to improve readability, and the ability to search, we are looking for original hard copies of THE WAY to scan at 600 dpi manually on a flat bed scanner. This will improve the quality significantly. We would also like an author/title index made; if you are interested in donating hard copies of THE WAY, or would like to build an author/title index, or could help financially, please contact Barry Jones- drbarryjones1991@gmail.com
